What's the latest version of QuuxPlayer?

The latest version is 2.8.1 (build 2.8.1.17). You can download it on our download page.

What's the difference between QuuxPlayer Standard Edition and QuuxPlayer Pro Edition?

There is no longer a difference. Now there is just "QuuxPlayer" and it has all the features that QuuxPlayer Pro had. Oh, and it's free.

What types of music files are supported?

All major music file formats are supported. Encrypted files are not supported. You can see the full list here.

How do I tell what commands the buttons on my gamepad will send?

From the Help menu on the main screen, select Show Gamepad Help. You can then press any button or control on your gamepad and see the command that will be generated.

How is volume measured?

Volume is measured on a decibel (dB) scale, starting at negative infinity (complete silence) up to zero (maximum loudness). Each 3dB increase corresponds to about a doubling of perceived loudness. Learn More...

Is QuuxPlayer available in other languages?

We currently do not offer any languages other than English; however, if you are interested in translating QuuxPlayer to your language you can find more information here. If you wish we will publish your translations for other QuuxPlayer users.

How do I automatically download cover art?

Make sure that the Download Missing Cover Art from Amazon.com selection on the Options menu is checked and that you are connected to the internet.

How does the Now Playing playlist work?

The "Now Playing" playlist is a special playlist. The currently playing track is always at the top of the list, and if there are tracks listed after that, they will be played in order, even if you are not currently viewing the Now Playing list. You can add to the now playing list with the keyboard (F7), the mouse (right click and select Add to Now Playing) or the gamepad (Button 9).

What is clipping and how does QuuxPlayer prevent it?

Clipping occurs when the sound level of your music files exceeds maximum numeric value that your computer's sound system can handle (typically a number like 65,536.) QuuxPlayer has a control for preamp gain which adjusts the sound level when the file is decoded. The equalizer can increase the level of the decoded values. When music clips, it sounds harsh and degraded. But when the gain is too low, you are using less of your computer's dynamic range and fidelity can suffer. QuuxPlayer addresses this with Auto Clipping Control on the Options menu which will reduce the preamp gain when clipping is detected. Note that auto clipping control will not reduce preamp gain below -3.0dB, but a clipping warning will be displayed, which will remind you to further reduce gain if desired. How does QuuxPlayer determine what cover art to display?

QuuxPlayer will look for art in the following order. When it finds art it stops:

1. Embedded in the file;
2. In a file in the same directory as the audio file, named with the format <Artist> - <Album>.jpg;
3. In a file called folder.jpg in the same directory as the audio file;
4. Downloaded from Amazon.com (if enabled in the Options menu). If art is downloaded, it is saved in the same directory as the audio file with the format <Artist> - <Album>.jpg.

Does QuuxPlayer have any spyware?

No. QuuxPlayer never had and never will have any hidden spyware. We value your privacy and will not compromize that under any circumstances.

QuuxPlayer will occasionally check with quuxplayer.com to determine if there are any updates available. To do this it sends only the version of QuuxPlayer you are currently using (such as "2.8.1"). No personal information of any kind is ever sent. You can turn off this version check by going to the Options menu, selecting More Options... and unchecking the Automatically check online for upgrades checkbox.

Why does my security software alert me about simulated keystrokes?

QuuxPlayer uses simulated keystrokes to prevent screensavers and automatic sleep or hibernation from starting if the Disable Windows Screensavers option is selected on the More Options dialog. This is somewhat less intrusive than temporarily disabling and then restoring screensavers system-wide.
